NORTHAMPTONSHIRE'S GARDEN BIRDS MAKE A NEW HOME WITH DAVID WILSON
THREATENED species of garden birds have a great chance to move into a secure new home this year thanks to Northamptonshire's leading housebuilder.
This month's National Nest Box Week is designed to help our much-loved garden birds which are declining in numbers nationwide, a phenomenon thought to be due mainly to loss of gardens and suitable nesting sites in modern houses.
In the last 30 years starling numbers have fallen by 77 per cent, house sparrows by 64 per cent, blackbirds 39 per cent and robins 37 per cent, according to an annual survey by the British Trust for Ornithology.
But David Wilson South Midlands is doing its bit to counter this worrying trend by installing new bird boxes at it's the Cedars development in Corby.
The company hopes that these boxes will make comfortable new homes for starlings, house sparrows and other traditional hole-nesting species.
"Our vision is to create outstanding environments where people will aspire to live," said Jackie Day, Sales Director at David Wilson.
"That is why we are committed to doing everything we can to support the wildlife at our developments and create new habitats that will be sustainable for generations to come.
"The peak of the nesting season is in May but it is important to put-up nesting boxes well in advance so that birds can become accustomed to them. We are therefore acting now to put nest boxes on both newly built homes and suitable trees at the development."
Jeff Baker of the British Trust for Ornithology said: "We are delighted that David Wilson South Midlands is supporting our 2010 National Nest Box Week. The fact that a leading housebuilder is showing the way to help our feathered friends is a very exciting development."
National Nest Box Week runs from 14-25th February and is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology, Britain's leading bird research charity. For further information visit www.bto.org/nnbw
